Plumbing In A Water Underfloor Heating System

Before we plumb in your bespoke underfloor heating system we will design a comprehensive plumbing schematic specific to your installation.

Flow and Return Pipes

We will need to install a 22mm or 28mm flow pipe from the boiler to the each manifold position and a 22mm or 28mm return pipe back. This needs to be lagged or be in conduit beneath the floor insulation. As a general rule, manifolds with up to 9 ports need a 22mm supply and return and manifolds with 10 to 12 ports need a 28mm supply and return. Heat pump systems generally need a 28mm supply and return no matter what size the manifold is.

Circulating Pump

We will need to install the supplied high efficiency circulating pump onto the flow bar of the manifold using the supplied brass fittings - ensuring the pump is on the correct bar of the manifold (the bar with the flow meters on it) and is pointing in the right direction.

Mixing Valve

We will need to plumb in the supplied mixing valve before the manifold ensuring the flow and return pipes are fitted correctly in order to achieve the correct mixed water temperature.

2 Port Motorised Zone Valve

We will need to plumb in a 2 port motorised zone valve on the flow pipe before the mixing valve.

Expansion Vessel

We may need to plumb in an appropriately sized expansion vessel on the return pipe from the underfloor heating manifold.

We will need to add inhibitor or an antifreeze/inhibitor mix to the underfloor heating system to prevent corrosion and freezing.

Additional Zone Valves

We may need to add a 2 port zone valve to both the radiator system and hot water system in order for the underfloor heating system to be able to operate independently.

Magnetic Filter

If radiators make up part of your heating system we may need to add a magnetic filter to the return pipe before the boiler. The magnet in the filter collects the iron oxide in the water that is a result of corroding radiators. Removing the iron oxide prevents a build up of black sludge from accumulating in the system which would inevitably lead to clogged up pipework or seized up system components after an extended period of time.
